"Do you have a blog?", most people ask me. "Of Course not!":) --a typical response I've given.
Why would I have a blog? I don't have kids. I am not married. And I am not completely settled into my future career yet. I always thought to myself that I would start a blog when I truly felt inspired to. It's not like I was totally against it or didn't want to "conform" but I just felt like if I started one it would have to be for a good purpose and I would have to be somewhat devoted to it...ya know?
Well folks, it happened. Today.
I was inspired.
I was TRULY inspired. And the inspiration came in a way I never would have expected. A lot of you know that I have currently been looking for full time employment. I filled out endless applications online with the hospital (to further my career in the medical field...I want to go to PA school eventually), applied at restaurants, applied at schools to be a TA, applied for coaching jobs, I even broke down and started an application at a temporary staffing place. Then a friend of mine told me that she had a friend that said his work was hiring. I figured I had applied to so many places already that this wouldn't hurt either. So she gave me his number and I sent him a text saying I was interested. He told me to send my Resume along to him and that he would forward it. Anyway...to make the long story short...a couple weeks ago I received an email from this company that said they wanted to interview me. I went to the job interview a week before Christmas and apparently they liked me and I got the job!! Yeah:) The Lord truly answers prayers in His own time and own way.
You're probably wondering..."Ok, so where is the inspiring part?" It's next, I promise.
So I started the week of Christmas and one day I asked a co-worker what the company did for their employees for Christmas (just out of curiosity). He told me that the company gave out 100 dollars to each employee (who wanted to participate) to "do something good for someone else". I thought that was really great idea and went about my work that day and kinda forgot about it.
Today I was again reminded of that 100 dollars. The company has a meeting called a "power stand". I don't know how often they hold it but the employees (those that can attend) are invited to it and it's a time for the CEO to talk to the employees about the company and how it's doing and also a time to get to know new people that have been hired on. I was a little late to it and didn't catch everything but what I caught was incredible. The CEO had asked employees to email him their stories of the 100 dollars and what they did with it. Here are just some of the stories:
*Some people donated their money to day cares and helped out sub for Santa families.
*Another girl said that she has been staying at the hospital with a brother for a couple months and noticed that lots of children were not able to go home for Christmas so she used the money to buy books where you can record your voice and the kids they gave them to were able to record their voices and send the books home with their families so they could hear their voices and visa versa.
*One man gave his money to a friend who needed money to pay to register her car. (Registering your car is expensive!!)
*Some people bought groceries for others at the market anonymously.
*One man asked his family one night what they should to with the money...they thought it would be great to get others involved and from that they ended up with 1400 dollars from neighbors, friends, family members and others...they ended up taking half of the money to a neighbor that had lost his job after being employed for 30 years and was struggling financially and the other half of the money they took to the gas station. Weird right? A gas station? They did this on Christmas eve and wanted to buy gas for those that were filling up their cars. He figured this would be a great thing to do because people had already spent money on gifts and things and filling up the car is just one more thing. He said, when he was telling us the story today, trying to hold back tears (ha ha I was trying but totally failed), that he was so grateful for being able to do that because he children were really able to see what service can do for other people.
Anyway I feel so grateful that the Lord put me in this company at this time, not because I finally have a job and work, but because of the lesson I learned today. When we help others and serve those around us then we are changed and are taught great lessons. This reminds me of a powerful scripture....Mosiah 2:17 Behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.
I know that as we serve we become better people. We are strengthened and taught great lessons. The Lord shows us what can be and then blesses us more. We are not only serving them, but our God....and those who serve learn the greatest lessons.
